Philippine embassy checking on Pinoys after Tonga tsunami

Coordination efforts by the Philippine embassy in New Zealand are ongoing to assess the situation on the ground regarding the condition of Filipinos in Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji following the eruption of an underwater volcano last weekend.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the Philippine embassy in Wellington is closely following the developments in the afflicted areas. They estimate that 87 Filipinos reside in Tonga, 300 in Samoa, and 400 are in Fiji.

It was reported that residents are moving to higher ground and there has been a disruption in communication systems in the islands. Ash continues to affect the area.

However, there are no immediate reports on injuries or on the extent of the damage due to connectivity issues.
