Science Secretary Fortunato dela Pena has urged those who have COVID-19 and are taking lagundi to follow the guidelines recommended by experts, particularly from the University of the Philippines – Manila who conducted a clinical trial on the medicinal plant as a supplemental treatment for the viral disease.

In his weekly Bayanihan briefing, Dela Pena and the UP Manila clinical trial team said people should follow the prescribed dosage to ensure the effectivity of lagundi to treat cough symptoms of COVID-19.

He said that adults may take a 100mg tablet or 5mL of the 600mg syrup thrice daily. Meanwhile dosage for pediatric patients would vary depending on their age range. Following the guidelines of the medicine may alleviate mild COVID-19 symptoms especially loss of sense of smell too.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) funded clinical trials on lagundi as a supplementary therapy for COVID-19. The research saw positive results in their clinical trial in October last year, seeing that it helped relieve mild symptoms.
