Comelec: May elections won’t be postponed

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said it will not entertain petitions to suspend the May 9 general elections as postponing it for any reason will be a violation of the Constitution.

The spokesperson for the COMELEC, James Jimenez, said they had anticipated that certain quarters would try to delay the elections so the move comes as no surprise, and will not be considered.

On the other hand, COMELEC would see if they would approve the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan’s (PDP-LABAN) request to reopen the filing of certificates of candidacy.

The COMELEC is scheduled to start the printing of ballots by January 15 after issuing the list of official candidates by January 7.
