The Department of Health said that there is a high possibility of local transmission of the Omicron variant because of the sharp increase in cases.
For consecutive days, DOH has reported more than 4,000 new infections. In a statement by Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, she said that other countries had trends that had cases double every two days and it’s seen in the Philippines now.
However, she stressed that a definitive genome sequencing is still needed to confirm the local transmission of the variant. Vergeire said several factors play into the rise of cases and among this is the increase in the mobility of people.
Due to the situation, the country is once again classified as “high risk” in terms of coronavirus transmission, with daily cases increasing by 570%.
