Online Shopping Can Be Worse For Environment

Both brick-and-mortar and online retailers are working to lessen their carbon footprint in an effort to make the shopping experience more eco-friendly.

Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, provides electric vehicle chargers at more than 100 of its store locations for use by suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its global supply chain.

Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, said sustainability is an ongoing commitment at the company. Last year, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced a broad plan to fight climate change, including meeting the Paris climate agreement 10 years early, which will make the company carbon neutral by 2040.

The retailer said it has ordered 100,000 new electric delivery vehicles and plans to start using them in the last mile delivery of packages by 2021. It expects 10,000 of them to be on the road in the next two years and all in operation by 2030, “saving millions of metric tons of carbon per year.”
