Re-released sci-fi blockbuster ‘Avatar’ retakes all-time box office crown

The 2009 megahit “Avatar” has once again emerged as the highest-grossing film of all time as the sci-fi blockbuster’s global box office surpassed 2.8 billion dollars on March 13 after it was re-released in the Chinese mainland.

Directed by renowned filmmaker James Cameron, the movie had raked in over 7.8 million dollars in the Chinese mainland as of Saturday, according to data from Chinese ticket platform Lighthouse.

The film earned 3.4 million dollars on March 12, the first day of its re-issue in the Chinese mainland, surpassing the domestic comedy hit “Hi, Mom,” which had led the box office chart for 25 straight days, according to data from the China Movie Data Information Network.

Debuting some 12 years ago, “Avatar” held the global box office title for a decade until it was overtaken by the Marvel superhero epic “Avengers: Endgame,” which amassed 2.79 billion dollars in 2019.
