Who is running COVAX and which countries are donating to it?

COVAX is co-led by the Vaccine Alliance or GAVI, the World Health Organization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.

COVAX has raised 6.3 billion dollars but says it requires another two billion dollars to meet its target of delivering 1.3 billion doses for 92 low-and-middle-income countries this year.

The U.S. has pledged two billion dollars in funding for 2021, with a further two billion dollars expected for 2022, while Germany donated over one billion dollars this year. Many other countries and institutions are donating, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and TikTok.

China has offered 10 million doses of its Sinopharm vaccine and, like Russia with its Sputnik V jab, is directly giving vaccines to poorer countries. Beijing is providing vaccines to nearby countries such as the Philippines.

The UK, which ordered over 400 million doses of vaccines, triple what it needs, will give over half its excess doses to COVAX.
