P2.7 billion in SEA Games funds still unexplained

More than 12 months after the closing ceremonies of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in the country, the two NGOs tasked with organizing the international sports meet have still not liquidated over 2.76 billion pesos taxpayers paid to host the regional competition.

State auditors noted that, despite demand letters, the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee has not accounted for the 2.2 billion pesos in financial aid it received from the government while the Philippine Olympic Committee has also not yet liquidated 535 million pesos.

“[Financial assistance] released to Phisgoc and POC in 2019…remained unliquidated as of year-end despite completion of the intended purpose,” the Commission on Audit said in a report.

In addition, the Philippine Sports Commission also “granted additional [assistance] to Phisgoc from [January 29] to June 19, 2020 [for over 417 million pesos] despite non-liquidation of previous assistance.”
