A pneumonia outbreak was first reported in the city of Wuhan in central China’s Hubei province in December 2019. Experts have attributed the outbreak to a novel coronavirus that has since spread across China and the rest of the world.
As of 7 a.m. on February 17, there are 70,500 confirmed cases in China and 688 abroad. There have also been 1,767 deaths in China and three abroad.
It has also been reported that 10,559 individuals have recovered from the virus, however, health experts have warned of the risk of reinfection for the recovered.
Human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus has also been confirmed.
Level 1 emergency response has been activated in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities on the Chinese mainland.
New confirmed cases of the coronavirus outside Hubei Province have been dropping for 12 consecutive days.
