Obama Criticizes Trump for Discouraging People From Voting

Former US President Barack Obama last Friday criticized President Donald Trump for “trying to discourage people from voting” in the presidential election in November, as Trump attempts to “kneecap” the U.S. Postal Service.

Obama commented on Trump’s opposition to providing extra funding for the Postal Service to facilitate extensive mail-in voting amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said, “What we’ve seen, in a way that is unique to modern political history, is a president who is explicit in trying to discourage people from voting. What we’ve never seen before is a president say, ‘I’m going to try to actively kneecap the Postal Service to [discourage] voting and I will be explicit about the reason I’m doing it.'”

Trump, who has repeatedly claimed that wider mail-in voting would lead to voter fraud without presenting evidence, said he opposes giving additional funding to the Postal Service as demanded by leaders of the Democratic Party.
