MFA: Postponing HK LegCo Election Reasonable

The postponement of the 2020 Legislative Council General Election in Hong Kong is a reasonable and legitimate decision, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam on July 31 announced the postponement of the election, originally scheduled for September 6, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said postponing the election is a necessary decision to protect the public’s health and to ensure the election is conducted openly and fairly.

Wang noted the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of China’s State Council and the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong have voiced support for the Hong Kong government’s decision, saying there are many examples of other governments postponing elections amid the pandemic.

Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection reported 115 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing total confirmed cases to 3,511.
