Ex-cop Slain on Rooftop

A former Manila Police District anti-drug operative who had gone absent without leave at the height of the government’s drug war in 2016 was gunned down in Malate, Manila last Thursday night.

Rolando Yulo, 49, who was left a paraplegic following an ambush in 2016, was working out on the rooftop of his five-story house in Barangay 712 when a gunshot was heard at around 6:10 p.m.

He died at the scene from a gunshot wound in the head.

Medico-legal reports indicate that the assailant – most likely a sniper – used a long firearm and a 5.56 bullet, according to Major Rommel Anicete, Manila Police District Criminal Investigation Detection Unit chief.

A ranking MPD official, who asked not to be named, said the victim was a high-value drug target and one of the original members of the “ninja cops” in the Western Police District, now the Manila Police District, involved in “recycling” illegal drugs seized in police operations.
