Romanian coalition government wins overwhelming confidence vote

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis swore in a three-party Romanian coalition government headed by liberal former general Nicolae Ciuca who took the oath of office last week, soon after winning an overwhelming vote in Parliament.

The coalition’s installment signals the end of a long period of instability in the country; especially after the minority cabinet led by Florin Citu collapsed last month.

The parliament voted to approve the new administration and it also led to an unlikely partnership between the center-right National Liberal Party and the leftist Social Democrat Party; both are former political rivals and are Romania’s biggest parties.

Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca will be leading a coalition composed of the Liberals, the Social Democrats, and Romania’s small ethnic Hungarian party, UDMR.
