Five US lawmakers defy China by meeting with officials in Taiwan

Five US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on Thursday to meet with government officials, going against Beijing to visit the contested island.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan democrat, said that her office received a blunt message from the Chinese embassy telling her to call off the trip. Although she said in a statement that Taiwan is the largest supplier of microchips for the auto industry, so supply chain issues will be discussed in the meeting.

Taiwan is a sensitive topic given how it has been a point of contention between Washington and Beijing. Tensions have been high since China has been increasing its military posturing and warplane flights near Taiwan.

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden made it clear that he was not encouraging Taiwan’s “independence” but he stressed that they do exactly what the Taiwan Act requires.
