Comelec logs over 4 million new voters

The Commission on Elections has surpassed its target of four million new registered voters for the scheduled general elections in May 2022 in the Philippines.

In a television interview on One News/TV5 last week, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the poll body already recorded around 4.3 million new voters ahead of the September 30 registration deadline they had set.

Jimenez said, “We expected around four million voter registrants pero parang nasa 4.3 million na tayo.”

He added that the total number of registered voters has reached more than 60 million, less than one million away from the Comelec’s target for next year’s presidential elections.

Jimenez informed the public that the Comelec would implement “extreme measures” for the 2022 voting exercise, such as possibly limiting to only five the number of people in each of the polling precincts to avoid the infection and further spread of the coronavirus disease.
