House to Hold First Hearing on ABS-CBN bid on March 10

The House of Representatives will finally hold its first hearing on ABS-CBN’s bid to get a fresh 25-year franchise on March 10, three days before it goes on Lenten break on March 13.

House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano said Wednesday that among the reasons they are conducting a hearing next week is to make it clear to the National Telecommunications Commission that Congress is acting on ABS-CBN’s franchise and that it should grant it provisional authority to operate pending the franchise renewal’s approval.

He also said this is to open the panel to more position papers from camps for and against the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise which is expiring on May 4.

The Speaker also said the first hearing by the House Committee on Legislative Franchises aims to set ground rules so the proceedings do not end up a “bull session” or a “sipsipan forum.”
