President Rodrigo Duterte has given ABS-CBN “blanket authority” on what to do with the rejected refund for his unaired campaign ads during the 2016 election, Malacañang said.
Duterte on Wednesday accepted the apology of ABS-CBN’s President and Chief Executive Officer Carlo Katigbak over the unaired ads. The President asked the network to donate the 2.6-million-peso refund to charity. The media giant said they would coordinate with the President’s office for guidance with regard to the donation.
The unaired advertisements had long been the center of Duterte’s tirades against ABS-CBN, but Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said these sentiments should not be interpreted to mean that the President seeks to shut down the network.
ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid is currently pending in Congress.
