Philippines backs move to make ASEAN a single tourism destination

The Department of Tourism welcomes recent moves to ensure Southeast Asia’s competitiveness as a single tourism destination in a bid to boost the recovery of the region’s tourism sector.

At the 24th meeting of the ASEAN Tourism Ministers, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat expressed support for the updated ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan until 2025. Among the new priority programs are the adoption of initiatives to support the digitalization of ASEAN tourism, the strengthening of data and information networks, and activities to promote connectivity and facilitate travel to and within the region.

The tourism ministers also discussed the impact of COVID-19, disclosing member states suffered a 76 percent drop in tourism receipts, while international arrivals declined by approximately 80 percent. These led to significant declines in related industries, such as the accommodations, tours and tourist transport sectors.
