Japan has brushed off London’s offer to host the 2020 Olympics if COVID-19 forced the games to be moved from Tokyo, insisting the games would open as planned on July 24.
Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the country will move forward in its preparations to host a safe and secure Olympics.
The assurance comes as a response to an offer from London’s mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey for the Conservative Party, proposing to take over the Olympics.
A spokesperson of London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement they’re willing to do it if the “unlikely” opportunity presents itself.
The Tokyo Olympic organizing committee and the International Olympic Committee have repeatedly said they are following the advice of the World Health Organization and that the games will go on. There are no plans to cancel or postpone the Olympics.
