China beefs up COVID-19 containment for world’s biggest annual human migration

Measures to contain COVID-19 were strengthened in China’s transportation system as the Spring Festival is nearing. China’s Lunar New Year will see the biggest annual human migration in the world.

A total of 1.7 billion passenger trips are expected during the holiday travel rush this year, or 40 million trips daily.

Compared with 2019, this year’s passenger trips are expected to fall 40 percent. The number of trips taken is also expected to increase by 10 percent compared with last year.

However, “the pressure on the country’s traffic system is still big,” and to cope with the recent flare-up of COVID-19 cases in China, especially in several northern provinces, the transportation system has fortified measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

People, including migrant workers, have been encouraged to stay in the cities where they work during the holidays to reduce the chance of spreading the virus. Visits to nursing homes have also been suspended.
