PH part of global vaccine pool for developing countries

The Philippines joined Covax in July and was among 92 countries to be supported by the Advance Market Commitment funding mechanism, ensuing the ability to pay will not hinder low- and middle-income countries from accessing coronavirus vaccine.

WHO chief scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan said a “fair allocation mechanism” was developed to make sure the vaccines are equitably distributed and would be distributed to countries “by tranches based on the percentage of their population.”

She added there was an understanding most countries would prioritize health and other frontline workers, who account for three percent of the population.

With Covax securing the initial doses, she said governments should now ensure their communities are well-informed about how the vaccines would be rolled out, making sure the cold chain, supply chain and data systems were in place, and that regulatory approvals “happen rapidly.”
