A 40-million-peso vegetable packaging and processing facility will be constructed inside the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center in La Trinidad, the Department of Agriculture said, with DA Secretary William Dar leading the groundbreaking of the facility last December 22.
Dar said, “The rationale of having this food processing facility (is to avoid having to throw away excess food again).”
Through the facility, unsold or wasted vegetables, especially at times of low prices, will be absorbed, and it will complement the DA-funded 20-million-peso processing facility at Benguet State University.
Dar urged the region to use the packaging facility and promote it for value addition, adding, “One objective would be to have a packaging innovation unit that would continue to promote and introduce packaging materials that are relevant in showcasing new technology.”
Focus will be on the ready-to-cook vegetables which are common in Western countries.
