Six troopers involved in the recent sea encounter with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu were given medals and cash rewards by President Duterte on November 15.
The encounter near Sulare Island in Parang town on November 3 resulted in the killing of seven ranking members of the bandit group.
Army chief Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana flew to Sulu to personally pin four Gold and two Silver Cross medals on the officers and soldiers and congratulate them at Camp General Teodulfo Bautista in Jolo.
The Gold Cross is the fourth highest military award that recognizes gallantry in action in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Sobejana was assisted by Brigadier General Manuel Sequitin, assistant division commander of the Army’s 11th Infantry Division, in pinning the medals on the troopers.
The army chief handed over the 2.5-million-peso cash reward given by the president to the 11th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Sulu.
