COVID-19: WHO Exec Discourages Over-reliance On Vaccines

The World Health Organization on Tuesday said the fight against the coronavirus pandemic should not only rely on the development and availability of vaccines.

The WHO’s regional director for Western Pacific, Dr. Takeshi Kasai, expressed optimism about the speed in the development of anti-COVID-19 vaccines.

Kasai said, “But I am also cautious because even [if] they can really manage, develop [a] safe and effective vaccine, the production capacity would not really meet the demand coming from the entire world. I think what is important is that we continue to improve our response and not just hope for the vaccine.”

With partner groups, WHO established the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, which has an initiative called COVAX that ensures fair access to the vaccine among countries.

Kasai added, “We are now working together with countries around the world to find a way to make those pledges into action.”
