The Department of Education reported that of the 20.2 million who enrolled in public schools for the coming school year, 250,000 students came from private schools.
DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali said the figure from public schools is now at 85% of the 22.5 million enrollment number last year.
He claimed the quality of public education has improved with the DepEd’s campaign of delivery of quality basic education.
However, he also considered the COVID-19 situation as one factor of the transfer of students from private schools to public schools.
DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones announced 257,220 enrolled for the Alternative Learning System. Briones said the DepEd is not insisting students go online for their learning.
If radio, television, online and other platforms are still unavailable for students, they can go for DepEd printed modular materials to be distributed by schools with the help of local government units.
