A 20-year national housing strategy is in the works to address the need of Filipinos for shelter, which is expected to balloon to 22 million units by 2040, according to the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development which was formed in January.
Human Settlements Secretary Eduardo del Rosario said he has ordered the formation of a technical working group to prepare the housing plan. Del Rosario said, “There will be a big housing gap if we will not plan a housing strategy to boost housing production.”
The 20-year strategy aims to address short-term, medium-term, and long term needs for shelter of millions in the country. From 2017 until the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, Del Rosario said the country needs about 6.5 million housing units and averages some 205,000 new units per year.
The secretary has given the technical working group until October this year to come up with a housing strategy.
