Hidilyn Diaz’s journey to the Tokyo Olympics has encountered a roadblock.
This, after Colombia — which was set to host a qualifying event this week — issued travel restrictions “to any foreigner who has been to Europe or Asia within the past 14 days.”
The move was a precautionary measure against the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Diaz, a silver medalist in the 2016 Rio Olympics, needed to participate in the event in Cali, Colombia to ensure her qualification to the Tokyo Olympics. It would have been her sixth qualifying tournament. If she placed in the top 10, it would have assured her spot in the Games.
As it stands, Diaz remains in Malaysia where she is training with her team.
According to the International Weightlifting Federation website, the events in Colombia have been postponed.
Diaz is currently ranked fifth in the world, behind four Chinese lifters.
