Obiena to receive incentive for setting new marks

A hefty 1.5-million-peso cash incentive awaits pole-vaulter EJ Obiena after he registered a new Asian and national record in the 17th Golden Roof Challenge in Austria.

The Philippine Sports Commission approved the financial reward as Obiena cleared 5.93 meters to eclipse the national record of 5.91 meters he set in the Paris Diamond League last month and the Asian record of 5.92 meters Kazakh Igor Poptapovich posted at the Paris World Indoor Championships in 1998.

Being awaited is the confirmation from the World and Asian Athletics Federations that the 25-year-old Tokyo Olympian broke the 23-year-old Asian mark. The government agency had given Obiena 250,000 pesos for shattering the previous national standard of 5.87 meters he etched in Poland in June with 5.91 meters in the Paris meet last month.

Obiena is abroad to continue training for the 2024 Paris Olympics after missing out on a podium finish in Tokyo.
