DOST underscores importance of participation in solidarity vaccine trials

Dr. Jaime Montoya, executive director of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development underscored the importance of the country’s participation in the upcoming World Health Organization Solidarity Vaccine Trials.

Montoya said at least two vaccines will be used in the country during the trials which may begin this month.

He noted, “These vaccines that will be included in the solidarity trials are the vaccines that the WHO thinks will be the most helpful and would be most available to countries.”

He added, “They will only include vaccines that have been evaluated thoroughly by the scientific advisory group of the WHO, who are very keen clinicians and vaccines scientists who really know about the science of vaccination.”

While the vaccine brands and source countries have not been disclosed, the trials will not include vaccines already in use or almost finished with clinical phase 3 trials.
