Manila Mayor Isko Moreno approved an ordinance for the establishment of a cemetery exclusively for Muslims in the country’s capital.
The 2,400-square meter cemetery will be located inside the Manila South Cemetery, Moreno said in a video message posted on Facebook.
A 56-square meter cultural hall will be also built inside the Muslim cemetery.
Moreno said a 49-million-peso budget has been appropriated for the cemetery’s construction.
The cemetery will be under the supervision of the Manila Health Department, Moreno said. He added that this endeavor is the start of proof of a dream come true.
It is being done in recognition of the influence and contribution of the Muslim community in the city. It was also being done out of respect for the history of Manila which was initially ruled over by Muslims.
