PhilHealth Mafia Allegedly Pocketed P15-B

Philippine Health Insurance Corporation officials have allegedly pocketed some 15 billion pesos through anomalous transactions, a resigned PhilHealth officer disclosed during a Senate hearing Tuesday.

Thorrsson Montes Keith, who resigned as PhilHealth anti-fraud legal officer due to what he described as widespread corruption in the agency, alleged that a “mafia” was behind what he branded as the “crime of the year” due to fraudulent schemes.

Keith testified before the Senate committee of the whole: “(I believe that the money spent and stolen amounted to more or less 15 billion pesos).”Amid the discovery of alleged PhilHealth anomalies, acting senior vice president Nerissa Santiago said the agency could go bankrupt next year.

Santiago told senators the agency, which has some 221 billion pesos in funds, may no longer be able to sustain operations due to decreased collections and increased payouts due to COVID-19.
